6th CONFERENCE of IARPotHP
Catania - Syracuse 2023, October 9th-12th

NEW THEORIES AND METHODS FOR OLD POTTERY:
INNOVATING PERSPECTIVES ON HELLENISTIC CERAMICS

The aim of the 6th IARPotHP conference is to present the most up-to-date interpretative approaches to the study of the complex phenomena linked to the production of everyday artefacts used in Hellenistic times; to disassociate the study of these productions from the traditional practice of merely cataloguing items and to articulate, instead, clearer and more satisfying answers to the questions archaeologists nowadays pose to objects of material culture.
Proposed topics of the Conference are:
– Status quaestionis about new research and studies on Hellenistic pottery
– Theoretical approaches and study method in the field and in the laboratory
– Criteria for reading ceramics in archaeological contexts: contextual and functional analysis and social role of ceramics
– Using archaeometry to address historical questions starting from historical question
– The Hellenistic Mediterranean: interpretative approaches to ceramic assemblages.
– Relationships between production centers in the Mediterranean basin: convergences and divergences
– Fine and plain wares as items of exchange
– ICT and Hellenistic pottery
– A special view from Hellenistic Sicily: updates from a land of sunshine
– An agenda for the future

If you wish to present a paper or a poster at the conference, please include a reference to the most fitting of the above-mentioned topics, and send a completed registration form, as well as a short abstract (max. 500 words) by the 31st of May 2023 to: conf6@iarpothp.org

The languages of the conference are English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian. Abstracts and texts in PowerPoint presentations must be in English.
Conference fee: for non-IARPotHP members € 70 (payment details will be announced later).
